Bible Verses for Anxiety

If you are reading this with a tight chest, racing thoughts, or the feeling that something is about to go wrong — you are not alone, and you are not weak. The Bible takes anxiety seriously. It names it. It does not shame the people who carry it. What follows are thirteen passages God has used to steady anxious hearts for centuries. Read slowly. You do not need to get through all of them today.

Philippians 4:6-7

In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

Paul does not say try harder to relax. He says hand it over, one request at a time, with thanksgiving mixed in. The peace he promises is not the absence of pressure — it is a guard placed around your heart while the pressure continues.

Matthew 6:25-26

Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious for your life: what you will eat, or what you will drink; nor yet for your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? See the birds of the sky, that they do not sow, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns. Your heavenly Father feeds them. Are not you of much more value than they?

Jesus does not minimize the things you are anxious about. He raises a bigger question: who is responsible for the outcome? If the Father feeds the birds without their planning, He is not going to forget you.

1 Peter 5:7

casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

One sentence. Two halves. You throw the weight. He carries it because He loves you — not because you have earned the right to be carried.

John 14:27

Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.

The peace Jesus gives is His own peace. It is not a feeling you have to manufacture — it is a gift He hands you that the world cannot give and cannot take away.

Psalm 23:4

Yes, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

The valley is not removed. The walk continues. What changes is the company. Anxiety often feels like aloneness — Psalm 23 names a Shepherd who is right there in the dark with you.

Psalm 46:1-3

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas; though its waters roar and are troubled, though the mountains tremble with their swelling.

A very present help — not a help that arrives later, not a help that has to be summoned. He is already here.

Isaiah 41:10

Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

Four promises in one verse: I am with you, I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you. Pick the one you most need today and carry it.

Matthew 11:28-30

Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Notice that He does not promise the absence of a burden — He promises a different yoke. Anxiety is its own kind of labor. He invites you to swap it for one you can actually carry, with Him.

Psalm 94:19

In the multitude of my thoughts within me, your comforts delight my soul.

Anxious thoughts come in multitudes. This verse does not claim the multitude stops — it claims that even in the swarm, God's comfort still gets through.

2 Timothy 1:7

For God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.

The fear itself is not your spirit. The fear is not who you are. The Spirit God has given you is power, love, and self-control — under the fear.

Proverbs 12:25

Anxiety in a man's heart weighs it down, but a kind word makes it glad.

Solomon names it directly: anxiety is heavy. And the antidote he names is small — a kind word. Be one. Receive one. Both count.

Psalm 55:22

Cast your burden on Yahweh and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved.

Cast is a strong verb. Not gently place. Not mention. Throw the weight.

Romans 8:38-39

For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God's love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Anxiety whispers, You might lose Him. Paul writes back: there is no force in creation that can separate you from God's love. Not the one you are afraid of. Not even yourself.

A prayer

Father, I bring You the worries I have been carrying — the ones I can name and the ones I cannot. I cannot make my own heart be still, but You can. Be a present help in this trouble. Guard my heart and my thoughts with Your peace. I trust You with what I cannot control. Amen.
