Bible Verses for Depression and Discouragement
Depression is not a failure of faith. Elijah, David, Job, Jeremiah — some of the Bible's most faithful people walked through long dark seasons. These thirteen passages are not a cure. They are companions. Read what fits today. Leave the rest for another day. And if the darkness is heavy, please talk to a doctor, a pastor, or someone you trust.
Psalm 42:11
Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him: my Savior, my helper, and my God.
The psalmist talks to his own soul. He does not pretend he is fine. He names the despair, then talks himself back toward hope. You can do this too.
Psalm 34:17-18
The righteous cry, and Yahweh hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles. Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.
He is near. Not at a distance. Near to the crushed.
Lamentations 3:21-23
This I recall to my mind; therefore I have hope. It is because of Yahweh's loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion does not fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.
Jeremiah is in the depths when he writes this. He recalls something to his mind — actively, deliberately. Sometimes hope is a discipline before it is a feeling.
Isaiah 43:1-2
But now Yahweh who created you, Jacob, and he who formed you, Israel, says: Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by your name. You are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, and flame will not scorch you.
When — not if. The waters will come. He will be in them with you.
Psalm 40:1-3
I waited patiently for Yahweh. He turned to me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay. He set my feet on a rock, and gave firm footing. He has put a new song in my mouth, even praise to our God.
David's testimony — there was a horrible pit, and there was a coming-out. The waiting was real. The deliverance was real.
Matthew 11:28
Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
Heavily burdened. He is talking to you.
Psalm 30:5
For his anger is but for a moment. His favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may stay for the night, but joy comes in the morning.
Sometimes the night is long. But it is a night, not a forever.
1 Kings 19:5-8
He lay down and slept under a juniper tree; and behold, an angel touched him, and said to him, Arise and eat! He looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on the coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and lay down again. The angel of Yahweh came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you.
Elijah was suicidal. God's first treatment was a meal and a nap. Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is eat and sleep.
Romans 15:13
Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope, in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Hope is not generated by you. It is filled into you by the God of hope, through the Holy Spirit. You do not have to manufacture it.
Psalm 23:4
Yes, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
Through the valley. You are not staying here.
2 Corinthians 4:8-9
We are pressed on every side, yet not crushed; perplexed, yet not to despair; pursued, yet not forsaken; struck down, yet not destroyed;
Paul names the realities and the limits. Pressed but not crushed. Perplexed but not to despair. Down but not destroyed.
Psalm 139:11-12
If I say, Surely the darkness will overwhelm me; the light around me will be night; even the darkness does not hide from you, but the night shines as the day. The darkness is like light to you.
Even your darkness is not dark to God. He sees you in it.
John 16:33
I have told you these things, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have trouble; but cheer up! I have overcome the world.
Jesus does not deny that you will have trouble. He tells you who has already won the larger battle.
A prayer
Father, I am tired. Some days I can hardly find the words to pray. Be near to my broken heart. Be a light in the dark. Send me people who will not be afraid of where I am. And if there is help I need from a doctor or a counselor, give me the courage to receive it. Amen.
